Step 1: Wet your hands

Wet your hands with clean, running water To begin the handwashing process, turn on the faucet and wet your hands thoroughly with clean, running water. Adjust the temperature to a comfortable level—neither too hot nor too cold. Wetting your hands helps to remove dirt and debris, making it easier for the soap to lather and cleanse your skin effectively.

Step 2: Lather (Apply an adequate amount of soap)

Next, apply enough soap to your wet hands. It is crucial to use either liquid soap or bar soap for this purpose. Avoid using antibacterial soap unless directed by a healthcare professional, as regular soap is equally effective at removing most germs. Remember, using an adequate amount of soap ensures thorough coverage of your hands.

Step 3:  Scrub

Rub your palms together vigorously, ensuring the soap covers all surfaces of your hands, including the back of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails. This friction helps to dislodge and remove dirt, bacteria, and other harmful microorganisms from your skin. Continue rubbing your hands together for at least 20 seconds, which is roughly the time it takes to sing the “Happy Birthday” song twice.
